Doors

I love the work of author and artist Morgan Harper Nichols. In her daily reminder email today she talked about the metaphor of a door. She says, "When it comes to the metaphor of the door, it's often about the ones you haven't yet gone through—perhaps even closed doors down a hallway, and you're in the position of having to choose one. Thinking of doors opening this way can be enlightening; at the same time, it's important to take a moment to look back and recognize that you have already been on a journey of discovering what’s on the other side of a door to a space you’ve never entered before."

It reminded me of a pivotal coaching session with my coach whom I worked with while I was in the midst of change. At the time, I was deciding if I should venture through a door into a new phase of my career. She asked me to describe the door I was approaching. Was it closed? Wide open? Or open just a crack? What did the door feel like when I touched it in my mind's eye? Was it heavy? Smooth? Did I want to try peaking through the crack, or even boldly open it without going through it just to see what I could see?

The door became real. Observable. Within reach. I could touch it and see it. And in describing the door, I was able to let go of some fears about opening it. After all, it was just a door - I've opened those before. The session was pivotal. What I saw when I dared to look through the threshold was a beautiful expanse! I wanted more.

When I read Morgan's email today, I was reminded of the many doors I've walked through in my life. I've crossed over a few thresholds that took massive amounts of courage and faith, and some that were complete no-brainers. I've welcomed new seasons and adventures, and I've closed chapters and left things behind walking through doors. Some big doors, some smaller ones. But the fact is, I've got experience stepping through doorways into new spaces. We all do. Having a coach to help me see that my cracked-open, heavy, beautiful door wasn't opening to a sheer drop off but to new possibilities.

If you are approaching a door in your life right now (or maybe one showed up on your path without warning), I would love to talk with you about it! I'm currently enrolling new coaching clients who are making moves! If you want to explore what's on the other side of that door, reach out! 💗
